Atlantic Waves, London International Festival of Exploratory Music
is getting bigger, better and more global! Innovative international collaborations and outstanding creative musicianship have been sought out for the 2007 programme, which is based on world premieres.

This year the much praised festival features 22 concerts in 8 days, with more than 70 artists from around the world, including Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Israel, Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Finland, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Japan and Australia. A rather special programme even for cosmopolitan London.

On November 9, Grain of Sound will be curating a night of electronic soundscapes and mind stimulating visuals. Includes innovative collaborations between sound artists Richard Chartier (USA), Sawako (Japan/USA), Shinjiro Yamaguchi (Japan) and video artist João Silva (Portugal); Terre Thaemlitz (USA/Japan), Stilb (Portugal), Jonas Olesen (Denmark) and guitarist Manuel Mota (Portugal); Tim Hecker (Canada) with Safe & Sound (Portugal) and visual artist M0rph3u (Portugal)

'Marches of the new World', new record by legendary Portuguese underground figure David Maranha, who has also been putting out music with the mythical Osso Exótico unit for almost 20 years (his previous release was with Patrícia Machás and drone duo Minit as Organ Eye, who put out a self-titled album on the Staubgold label), is his more recent study & advancement in exploring, witnessing and gentoperating new slices of blissful, savaged drone music. (...) The music is harsher, grittier, more angular, and I must admit very nice, because it goes back to a tradition which is not copied these days very much, and certainly not as nice. Its a great thing to see this done here, moving away from his earlier work, but still re-inventing drone music. Great stuff.

A união elegante das guitarras foi algo quase transcendental de se ver e ouvir. Intensidade sem que o volume fizesse parte da equação; determinismo sem se negligenciar o espírito free (…)" Major Eléctrico. Agora, nova oportunidade para nos deixarmos transportar para os ambientes abertos e hipnóticos que com o seu som ácido tão bem sabem construir.

Helena Espvall começou por tocar guitarra eléctrica ainda enquanto adolescente entediada no norte da Suécia. Depois de ter recebido lições de violoncelo nunca mais foi assaltada pelo tédio. Tocou em bandas rock, numa orquestra para filmes mudos, num ensemble árabe...mas a inspiração para tocar música improvisada livre aconteceu depois de ter assistido a uma performance memorável de Eugene Chadbourne. É nessa altura que se muda para os Estados Unidos da América, no ano 2000. Desde então tem tocado no Philadelphia New Dance and Music Ensemble, feito tournées com a banda folk-psicadélica Espers e tem cantado Bossa Nova.
A Grain of Sound é uma editora de música experimental sediada em Lisboa. Foi criada em 6 de Fevereiro de 2002. Serão oferecidos 25 discos Grain of Sound aos primeiros 25 bilhetes vendidos na noite do espectáculo.

Pedro  Tudela e Miguel Carvalhais trabalham como @c  desde 2000. O seu trabalho desenvolve-se no cruzamento de estéticas e abordagens complementares ao som electrónico e no confronto entre estruturas rítmicas com elementos sonoros livres, gerados ritmicamente ou baseados em  gravações de campo. A composição e a improvisação equilibram-se na ampliação  digital de realidades sonoras, cruzando referências e memórias, entre o  reconhecimento e a abstração.

Os Gigantiq são formados pela dupla André Gonçalves (guitarra e laptop) e  Nuno Moita (gira-discos e pma-5). Constroem padrões cíclicos intensos que se misturam continuamente entre si originando uma massa sonora aparentemente  estática. No entanto ela move-se…

"Trans-Sister Radio" is an electroacoustic radio drama about transgenderism and migration originally developed for Hessischer Rundfunk by Terre Thaemlitz.

"When travelling, dressing for the occasion means downplaying our gender bending by dressing to match our documented genders. Many fully transitioned transsexuals whose countries prohibit legally changing their genders resort to wearing asexual sweat pants and other anti-fashion statements as a kind of devolutionary drag, all in hopes of passing as the man or woman they once were. Or, in some cases, they resort to using false passports showing genders that match their appearances. It all gives new meaning to the term 'pass control.'" - Terre, Transgendered MTF(TMTF...), on international travel.

The hidden link revealed on our #1 (May, 2004) just got stronger on this Autumn/Winter double issue: the Sonic Scope Quarterly presents visuals from multidisciplinary artists and mostly are also musicians and sound "hunters".

We will continue to publish works from artists who are not active in the music field but we are enhancing that specific "cross-over" not only because the magazine was born out of an experimental music label but also because we are aware of the increasing number of artists who are spreading their talent through sound but also through visuals.
